Artist Statement

I am an artist living in Helsinki Finland. I am originally a painter. The materials and methods of my work have transformed in the recent years but I still paint.

I combine different art forms; painting, graphic arts, photography and digital imaging. I find the merging of different methods and approaches fascinating. My artworks contain many layers both in the method of creating and in their contents.

I am interested in polarities and their limits; common-private; figurative-non-figurative; when the surface becomes 3-dimensional space and 3-dimensional space becomes the surface. Color – non colour. I am interested in the spatium.

Colour is a very important element for me. I am interested in colour and non-colour. Colour affects us in many ways; through defined and learned knowledge, culturally. I believe that a colour can also contain an immediate, direct experience.

For me, making art is much like researching. Researching myself, my past, my surroundings in a way that allows the hidden information, the unconscious to come forward. I want to combine experience and scientifical knowledge. I’m after directness and spontaniety both in expression and in obtaining information.

I am interested in how we see and experience our surroundings, how an experience is formed in to a memory. How colour cultivates a memory and memory cultivates colour. How material, environment and emotions are connected to experiencing colour and vice versa.
In my work, I am trying to capture an entire visual experience with all it layers that are present in the experience and the memory; all the layers that create the engramme.

For me making art is a an effort to find a language which communicates directly without words, a language everybody has inside he/herself.
